David Roberts

"Esq. in the Dress He Wore in Palestine"......

I think this is not correct. As I know he put on some souveniers for a suitable outfit for the painting. Best regards, --Manfred Heyde 17:22, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

I agree that it's very unlikely that Roberts actually wore these clothes while traveling in Palestine. And there are accounts of him wearing western dress at various points in his travels. The reason he (or Lauder) chose these clothes was most likely to fit in with the romantic aesthetic of the day.

However, the painting does appear to have been called "David Roberts Esq. in the Dress He Wore in Palestine" (or very similar titles) for a long time. I'm having trouble tracking down where the painting is now held, as it does not appear in the online catalog of the National Galleries of Scotland (which may just mean they didn't choose to include it.)

Perhaps it would be good to expand the bit in en:David Roberts (painter) about this portrait, to make clear that it's not what he actually wore. In fact, there's probably a lot of detail that needs adding here.

On a related subject, I hope to gradually add to the Commons stock of Roberts' prints by uploading relevant images from the Library of Congress's public-domain scans. They have good scans of more than 200 Roberts prints. Rupert Clayton 02:53, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
